The Inspired Constitution

My friend Denise has reminded me of a post that I’ve been promising for a long time.

I believe that the Constitution of the United States of America was inspired by God.

The Lord told us: “According to the laws and constitution of the people, which I have suffered to be established, and should be maintained for the rights and protection of all flesh, according to just and holy principles; … And for this purpose have I established the Constitution of this land, by the hands of wise men whom I raised up unto this very purpose, and redeemed the land by the shedding of blood.”  (Doctrine and Covenants 101:77, 80 – emphasis added).  The Apostle Paul taught “All scripture is given by inspiration of God” (2 Tim 3:16).  The Lord also said “And whatsoever they shall speak when moved upon by the Holy Ghost shall be scripture, shall be the will of the Lord, shall be the mind of the Lord, shall be the word of the Lord, shall be the voice of the Lord, and the power of God unto salvation” (Doctrine and Covenants 68:4).

Sustaining of Church Leaders

Today we had Stake Conference.  Bishop Richard C. Edgley, 2nd Counselor in the Presiding Bishopric came as a visiting General Authority.  At the beginning of Stake Conference, we sustained the General and Local Authorities of the Church.  Of course, President Thomas S. Monson was sustained as President of the Church, he having held that calling since 4 February 2008.  President Gordon B. Hinckley, the 15th President of the Church, passed away on 27 January 2008.  If our Stake Conference had been 3 February 2008, I assume we would have sustained Thomas S. Monson as President of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles, and then sustained as members of that Quorum all 14 Apostles currently called.  We would still sustain members of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles as Prophets, Seers, and Revelators.  I wonder, however, if after all that, would we have sustained the Quorum of the 12 Apostles as the Presiding Authority of the Church?
