As most of you know, I own a computer repair company called Las Vegas Geeks.  One of the most common problems I run into is viruses, spyware, or some other kind of malware.  There are some great utilities out there to help clean up these problems, but new malware comes out faster then the tools to clean them up.  Yesterday, I was at two different places that had the same malware, Rootkit.Zlob.  I was able to most of the problems fixed using ComboFix, Hijack This, Spybot and a quick scan of MalwareBytes’ Anti-malware.  But the system was still running very sluggish.  I did a full scan with MalwareBytes and it would find two results of Rootkit.Zlob in the C:\Documents and Settings\%Username%\ folder.  When I tried to remove this with Malwarebytes, the system would freeze up. I could find the folder with the Command Prompt, but of course, since its a rootkit, I couldn’t remove it or find anything inside of the folder.  I thought about trying to use Windows Recovery Console, but since the problem is the Documents and Settings folder, the default settings of Recovery Console would not have allowed me to get into this folder.  And the system was running slowly enough that I didn’t want to try to change those settings.  So, I used a LiveCD and booted up the system.  I could then find this folder and remove it.  The system ran great after that.  I should also have had the same results plugging the drive into a different PC, although I didn’t try that.

As most of you know, my day job is a Mobile Computer Technician for Las Vegas Geeks.  We have been Microsoft Partners for several years.  Doing that time, I have received many e-mails about security patches as Microsoft has released them.  The latest update, however, is different.  Not only did I get the normal e-mail notification from Microsoft yesterday, I also got an e-mail from my account executive at Microsoft.  That has never happened before.  To further hightlight how important this particualar update is, my account executive called me today.  Due to the seriousness that Microsoft is placing on this update, I am posting this information here.

“This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in the Server service. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if an affected system received a specially crafted RPC request. On Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability without authentication to run arbitrary code. It is possible that this vulnerability could be used in the crafting of a wormable exploit. Firewall best practices and standard default firewall configurations can help protect network resources from attacks that originate outside the enterprise perimeter. The security update addresses the vulnerability by correcting the way that the Server service handles RPC requests.”

This security bulletin is MS08-067 and more information can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS08-067.mspx.  I highly recommend all who read this blog install this security patch.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has finished and released the new “Meeting House Locator” called LDS Maps.  It’s a really neat website that will show you the closest meeting houses as well as the assigned Wards for an address entered, including things like YSA and language wards.

Check it out at http://Maps.LDS.org

Somehow, a ton of comments disappeared off Mike’s World News.  I had to restore from backup from a few days ago to get them back, but some of the more recent ones may be missing.  Sorry for anyone who’s comment is missing.

I’m proud to announce that Las Vegas Geeks is now sponsoring “Jerk of the Week” on Newsradio 840 KXNT.

Jerk of the Week is a weekly segment held during the Casey Hendrickson show on Fridays in the 6 pm hour.

I just found out that the wife already posted this news already.

I had a birthday recently. As a birthday present, my Wife and my Mother purchased a Global Sun Oven, which is one of the Preparedness items that I’ve wanted. While I hope to use all of the items in the Everything Under the Sun - Solar Oven Food Storage Cookbook, I figured today, I’d start with something simple; I’d start with making hot dogs. I couldn’t find directions on making hot dogs in the Sun Oven. I had two different ideas of how to make them; first was to put them in a pot of water and let the Sun Oven bring the water to a boil. The second idea was to put them on a dish and cook them you would in an oven. I was planning on doing both, but didn’t have quite enough room in the Sun Oven. I ended up going with my first idea of putting them in a pot and letting the water boil. I did not put a lid on the pot and the glass lid of the Sun Oven got very steamy. After the hot dogs where finished, I decided to cook some chili. The Wife can’t eat chili yet, but Mikey and I can.

I thought the food came out pretty good.  I think I’m now ready to try more complex things in the Sun Oven.  They do sell larger Sun Ovens so at some point perhaps I’ll get a larger one, but for now, this one is good.

For anyone interested in trying to make a solar oven, try this one with your kids, from NASA.
