7th Article of Faith

13 Weeks of FHE - 13 Articles of Faith

“We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.”

Since all 3 kids were home last night, we were able to move forward on a new Article of Faith.  First we reviewed the 1st Article of Faith, the 2nd Article of Faith, the 3rd Article of Faith, the 4th Article of Faith, the 5th Article of Faith, and the 6th Article of Faith.  Next we read the 7th Article of Faith.  I tried to explain what each of the 6 listed gifts of the Spirit were, but was hard with the attention span of 3 little kids (and the Wife also).  Next, we moved into activities.  Mikey loves word searches, so we did a simple 7th Article of Faith Word Search.  Finally, as we moved into a second activity, I said how all of us have things we are good at, gifts or talents.  Mikey said “Yeah, like Josh is really good at running.  He is one of the fastest kids in his class, but I am one of the slowest in mine.”  I told him that I was glad he could recognize the gifts or talents of other family members and that this was our next activity.  We took turns talking about the talents and gifts that other people in our family have.  After our closing song and prayer, we each had a cookie that Mommy made.

3rd Article of Faith (review)

13 Weeks of FHE - 13 Articles of Faith

3rd Article of Faith

We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.

7-year old Mikey is spending part of the week up at Grandma’s house.  As a result, I decided not to go ahead with the 7th Article of Faith that we were scheduled to do.  It seems like the kids are having trouble with the 3rd Article of Faith, so it seemed like a good day to review.  We sang an opening song, which Hannah picked.  We practiced the 1st Article of Faith, the 2nd Article of Faith (Josh‘s favorite), the 4th Article of Faith, the 5th Article of Faith, and the 6th Article of Faith.

Next, I proceeded told them the 3rd Article of Faith.  I asked if they remembered the lesson from a few weeks ago when we first did the 3rd Article of Faith.  At first neither kid did, but as I explained it, they remember.  We practiced the 3rd Article of Faith several times.  I then had the kids come sit on my lap.  (Josh will be going into Kindergarten in a fall and just finished a 3-week summer school.  He is very interested in math right now).  I had a little white board.  I used the marker and wrote 2 + 2 = 5.    As I was writing it, I told the kids that sometimes in our life we can make mistakes.  When we do, what can we do. Josh said “repent”.  I said told him that was correct.  I asked him if 2 + 2 equals 5.  He said that is such an easy question and that 2 + 2 = 4.  I told him that just like on this white board, I can take an eraser and remove the mistake, in our life, we can remove the mistakes we make, by having faith in Christ and repenting.  And, because of the Atonement, I continued, we are able to forgiven of our sins.  We did several other math problems, then Josh took the white board and wrote a bunch of questions with the right answers.  We then sang a closing song, which Josh picked.

6th Article of Faith

13 Weeks of FHE - 13 Articles of FaithWe believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.

As is our weekly tradition, we started family home evening by having the kids recite the 1st Article of Faith, the 2nd Article of Faith, the 3rd Article of Faith, the 4th Article of Faith, and the 5th Article of Faith, with varying degrees of success.  I then asked them what the full name of our Church is.  “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” came back the response from both Mikey & Josh.  I told them I wanted to break the name up.  “The Church of Jesus Christ“.  What does this mean?  We discussed how it is The Church of Jesus Christ because Jesus Christ started the Church and is the head of the Church. “Of Latter-day Saints’ is to distinguish it from the Church that the Savior started during His life.  We talked very briefly about the Great Apostasy, and I told them we would talk about that more in the future.

With all this background completed, Amanda was able to recite the 6th Article of Faith from memory.  We talked about the priesthood offices mentioned.  We then got on the ground and used wood blocks and “built” the Church with these priesthood offices.  The kids each built a Church also.  We practiced the 6th Article of Faith a few times and sang the 6th Article of Faith Primary Song.

5th Article of Faith

13 Weeks of FHE - 13 Articles of Faith

We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.

We started this week by having the kids recite the 1st Article of Faith, the 2nd Article of Faith, the 3rd Article of Faith, and the 4th Article of Faith.  None of them (nor The Wife) could remember the 3rd Article of Faith, without me helping them start it.  Guess we will need to do that one again.  I then read the 5th Article of Faith to them and then we all practiced it a few times.  I then passed out a 5th Article of Faith Coloring Sheet and had each of the kids color it.  After they were done (or at least partially done) coloring, we talked about the 5th Article of Faith and what it means.  I asked them, for example, do you think that our Bishop decided one day to be the Bishop.  All the kids said no.  I explained that the Stake President, after praying about it, called and set him apart to be Bishop.  I asked them if they think Mommy just one day decided to become the Primary Music leader.  No, the Bishop, after praying about it, called and set her apart.

We then played a game called “Bishop Says” (Simon Says).  After me being “the Bishop” for a while, 5-year old Josh wanted to be Bishop.  One of the times, he said “Bishop says Have a Pillow Fight”.   Finally, the kids then turned their coloring pages over and wrote a letter to the Bishop (well, at least MIkey did; Amanda wrote one from Josh and I wrote one from Hannah) to the Bishop thanking him for being our Bishop.  I addressed an envelope and we took it outside and put it in the outgoing mail.

4th Article of Faith

13 Weeks of FHE - 13 Articles of Faith4th Article of Faith

We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.

We started this week by having the kids recite the 1st Article of Faith, the 2nd Article of Faith, and the 3rd Article of Faith.  They needed a bit more help this week than previous weeks, but they doing pretty good at retaining the information.  The kids informed me that The Wife had told them earlier today what the 4th Article of Faith, but they couldn’t really remember what it was.  We discussed what each of the 4 parts of the 4th Article of Faith, trying to explain it at their level.

1) Faith – believing in something that you don’t see, which is true.  I gave them a poor example of a light switch.  We believe that when we turn on the light switch, light will come on.
2) Repentence – when we are mean to someone or do something bad, we feel bad about it, tell them sorry, and don’t do it anymore.
3) Baptism – we go into the water completely and make a promise with Heavenly Father.
4) Gift of the Holy Ghost – The Holy Ghost will tell us what we should do and help us, but we have to listen to him.  If we don’t, he will leave us.

We then looked up 8 scriptures, Doctrine and Covenants 58:42,  3 Nephi 11:33, Matthew 4:17, John 14:26, Helaman 5:47,  2 Nephi 31:8, Alma 32:21, and 2 Nephi 31:5.  We determined if that scripture was talking about Faith, Repentance, Baptism, or the Holy Ghost.  (the kids all got 2 Nephi 31:8 wrong).  We used the 4th Article of Faith Worksheet (alternate download The 4th Article of Faith Worksheet), coloring each of the scriptures based on what the verse talked about.

We then sang The Fourth Article of Faith primary song.  We then practiced it a few times, before sitting down and having a nice treat.

3rd Article of Faith

13 Weeks of FHE - 13 Articles of Faith

3rd Article of Faith

We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.

For this weeks lesson, I took a glass bowl and filled it about half way up with water.  I also had some food coloring in a small cup and some liquid bleach in a small cup.  I had the kids recite the 1st Article of Faith and the 2nd Article of Faith.  I had The Boss read the 3rd Article of Faith.  I then tied it into the 2nd Article of Faith a bit by reminding them that we are going to be punished for the naughty things that we do.  But, because of the atonement of Christ, we can be forgiven, if we do what Jesus asks.  We then looked at the bowl full of water.  I told them that this water is like all of us, clean and pure.  But then, we make bad choices, like be mean to our brother or sister, hit them, tease them, not obey mommy, lie, and lots of other things.  I then dropped a couple of drops of food coloring into the water.  The water changed colors and, I explained to them, was no longer clean and pure.  Heavenly Father is clean and pure and has said that we have to be clean like He is, if we want to return to live with Him in Heaven.  The Atonement of Christ allows us to repent and become clean and pure again.  I dropped in a couple of drops of bleach and the water started getting clean and pure.  Only negative we experienced was the amount of bleach needed caused a strong odor that my wife didn’t like.

We then practiced the 3rd Article of Faith a few times.  The kids then had a game they wanted to play.

2nd Article of Faith

13 Weeks of FHE - 13 Articles of Faith

2nd Article of Faith

We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.

For this weeks lesson, I took several small slips of paper and wrote different naughty things that the kids have done in the past, and put them in a glass bowl. I then had the 3 kids try to recite the 1st Article of Faith.  They all did pretty good. I had 7-year old Mikey read this Article of Faith.  I asked the kids if they knew what a transgression was.  Mikey knew it was when Adam partook of the forbidden fruit, but wasn’t sure what a transgression was.  I explained that a transgression is when we don’t do what Heavenly Father & Jesus want us to, when we make a naughty choice.  So, Adam’s transgression was when he didn’t do what Heavenly Father wanted and partook of the forbidden fruit.  We aren’t going to get in trouble, I explained, for the naughty choices that Adam, or anyone else, makes, just what we do.  I then took the glass bowl out.  I had each of the 3 kids and Amanda take a slip out, as did I.  Mikey read his strip “talk during the prayer”.  I asked if Hannah should get in trouble if Mikey talks during the prayer.  Mikey thinks for a second, and then said no.  Amanda helped Josh with his strip “get mad at your brother or sister for playing with your toys”.  I asked him if Mikey should get in trouble if Josh gets made that Hannah is playing with his toys.  After thinking for a moment, he said no.  Hannah went next, with Mikey helping her with her paper “teasing Josh”.  I asked her if Mikey should get in trouble when Hannah teases Josh.  Without hesitation, she said “No”.  Amanda and I read ours and the kids wanted to do more.  I had done many of them so we could do several rounds.  The kids found it very funny when I asked them if someone else should get in trouble when they make a naughty choice.  And each time, they said no, the other person shouldn’t get in trouble.  I liken it back to the 2nd Article of Faith.  No one else will get in trouble for what we do, only we will.  We all practiced saying the 2nd Article of Faith a couple of times.  We then had a nice treat.

1st Article of Faith

13 Weeks of FHE - 13 Articles of Faith

1st Article of Faith

We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.

For this Article of Faith, I had a candle and a lighter.  I had Mikey (my 7-year old) read the 1st Article of Faith.  I lite the candle.  As the kids (and Wife) watched, we talked about the Godhead has three distinct parts.  The candle can represent Heavenly Father.  The flame can represent Jesus Christ, the light of the world.  The oxygen needed for the flame to burn can represent the Holy Ghost, whom we cannot see.  We can see only the effect he has in our lives and the lives of others.  The kids practiced saying the 1st Article of Faith a couple of times.  We then played a game of their choosing.

Family Home Evening is set aside by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as each Monday.  Mormon Families use this time for games, spiritual lessons, a treat, or other wholesome activities.  My family strives to do this, but falls short.  I have decided that we would really strive for 13-weeks to do Family Home Evening each week.  During this time, we would cover the 13 Articles of Faith.  My children are 7, 5, and 3 years old.  It’s a bit hard to get something that keeps all of their attentions.  I am going to do one post each week on these Family Home Evening ideas, in hopes that others will be inspired to spend time together in their families.
