Back to school Family Home Evening

Tomorrow Mikey starts 5th grade, Josh 3rd, and Hannah 1st. Amanda and I decided to hold a short family home evening. Josh read 1st Samuel 16:7. We talked about how the Prophet Samuel was looking for the next King and how he learned that’s the Lord doesn’t care about how we look on the outside but the inside. We likened this to how there will be all sorts of different kids at school and we should not judge them based on how they look or what they wear but instead try to see them how God sees them and love them as God loves them. We then had Mikey read Matthew 11:28-30. We discussed how Christ took upon Him all of our heartache and pain, our sorrow and our stress, as well as our sins during the atonement and that we can put all of this on Him and accept in return His yoke, His burden, which is to love each other and follow His commandments.

We finished Family Home Evening with each kid (including 3-year old Lizzy) getting a Father’s Blessing.

11th Article of Faith

13 Weeks of FHE - 13 Articles of Faith“We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to
the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same
privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.”

Amanda was teaching a free coupon class last night, so we did Family Home Evening Sunday night.  We started with a song and a prayer.  We then had a family council where each family member can share problems or concerns they have.  We then reviewed each of the 1st 10 Articles of Faith.  Amanda had agreed to teach the lesson tonight, so I read the 11th Article of Faith and discussed with the kids what it meant.  She then took out a bowl of popcorn and told the kids the kernels that have popped represent those of us that have accepted the gospel and are bursting with potential. The unpopped popcorn represent those who have chosen not to listen, believe or accept the gospel. We can help be missionaries to them.  She then read the Parable of the Popper to them.  We all then enjoyed popcorn.

Next, I got out the 11th Article of Faith pages from the Article of Faith Puzzles.  Kids liked that.  We ended up putting the back piece in a sheet protector and putting tape on the back of the puzzle pieces so the kids could use it during the week.

We ended with another song and a prayer.

July Front Sight Membership Giveaway Winners

This morning, I typed the name of all the entries in my Front Sight Membership Giveaway contest.  As I had three ways to enter, my total entries were 31.  Several people had multiple entries, with one person having four entries.  I put all the entries in a small basket.  My kids enjoyed last time when I let Hannah, my youngest, pick the winner.  However, Mikey & Josh wanted to pick a name also.  So, this time, I let all three kids pick a winner, from youngest to oldest.

Hannah, my 3-year old went first:

Josh, my 5-year old then went:

10th Article of Faith

13 Weeks of FHE - 13 Articles of Faith

We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.

I had a meeting Monday night, so this week, we did Family Home Evening Sunday night.  I decided to post this Tuesday morning, however, as that has been the tradition these last 11 weeks.

We started with an opening song and opening prayer.  We then had a family council, where we discussed concerns the kids and parents had.  Next, we practiced the first 9 Articles of Faith.  I then read the long 10th Article of Faith to the family.  I discussed a few points of it and then read it again.  We next watched Zack & Zoey Explore the Articles of Faith #10

We finished with the 10th Article of Faith Poster from A Year of Family Home Evenings.  We read it a few times and then hung it up on the wall.

9th Article of Faith

13 Weeks of FHE - 13 Articles of Faith

“We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important  things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.”

After our opening song, prayer, and family council, we started Family Home Evening with a review of the first eight Articles of Faith.  Mikey has picked up on most of them pretty well, although the 4th Article of Faith is his favorite.  Josh is really good at the 1st Article of Faith, the 2nd Article of Faith (his favorite), and the 8th Article of Faith.  Hannah loves having someone help her recite any one we’ll let her. 🙂

We next practiced the 9th Article of Faith a few times.  I explained that to reveal something is the Lord telling us something.  I attempted to simplify it a bit by telling them that the 9th Article of Faith is basically telling us that we believe the things that God has told prophets in the past, we believe the things the Lord tells the prophets today, and we believe that in the future, God will tell the prophets things, and we believe those things.

Mikey loves word searches, so we did  9th Article of Faith Crossword Puzzle .  After doing that, I then led a discussion on Lorenzo Snow.  We watch a clip from the Windows of Heaven LDS video.  I paused it several times to discuss the movie and how that relates to the 9th Article of Faith.

We ended with another song and prayer.  Then we had some cookies as a treat.

My OCD Confession

I think that everyone has some OCD tendencies.  For me, I must have all the clothes hangers in my closet the same color; white.  Sometimes, there might be a hanger or two that somehow is a different color.  I tell myself its silly, but it bothers me.  But I try not to let it.  Tonight, I had to go through Amanda’s closet and take all the extra white hangers she had and put 8 or 9 hangers of various colors in hers.

What other weird OCD tendencies do people have?

8th Article of Faith

We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.”

This week, after an opening song and opening prayer, we reviewed the 1st Article of Faith, the 2nd Article of Faith (Josh’s favorite), the 3rd Article of Faith, the 4th Article of Faith, the 5th Article of Faith, the 6th Article of Faith, and the 7th Article of Faith.

I the used the 8th Article of Faith Poster  from A Year of Family Home Evening.  We practiced the 8th Article of Faith.  Amanda liked this picture a lot, and had Josh hang it on the wall so the kids could practice it all week.  We then talked about the Bible and the Book of Mormon and how they were both collections of writings of prophets.  We talked about how over time during the translation of the Bible, words were changed.  Some of them were done on accident, or because the writers were trying to help people understand the message.  I also told them how Jesus appeared to the people in America after His death and resurrection.  We watched a 2 1/2 minute video clip from Living Scriptures on when He appeared to the people.

Finally, we played the telephone game.  I took Mikey to a different room and told him “The red dog jumped over the river”.  He told Josh, who told Amanda, who told Hannah, who told us “The red dot jumped over the wall.”  We discussed this, in relation to the Bible translations.  Mikey then wanted a turn.  He told Josh “I like eating popcorn at the movie theatre.”  Mikey told Josh, who told me, who told Amanda, who told Hannah, who said “Mikey likes eating popcorn at movie theatres.”  Josh admitted to changing it to Mikey so that we knew it was it was Mikey (not Josh) who liked to eat popcorn.  We also discussed this and how well meaning people tried to help improve our understanding of the Bible, but how that can cause problems if their understanding was incorrect.

After closing with another song and prayer, we had a nice treat.

7th Article of Faith

13 Weeks of FHE - 13 Articles of Faith

“We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.”

Since all 3 kids were home last night, we were able to move forward on a new Article of Faith.  First we reviewed the 1st Article of Faith, the 2nd Article of Faith, the 3rd Article of Faith, the 4th Article of Faith, the 5th Article of Faith, and the 6th Article of Faith.  Next we read the 7th Article of Faith.  I tried to explain what each of the 6 listed gifts of the Spirit were, but was hard with the attention span of 3 little kids (and the Wife also).  Next, we moved into activities.  Mikey loves word searches, so we did a simple 7th Article of Faith Word Search.  Finally, as we moved into a second activity, I said how all of us have things we are good at, gifts or talents.  Mikey said “Yeah, like Josh is really good at running.  He is one of the fastest kids in his class, but I am one of the slowest in mine.”  I told him that I was glad he could recognize the gifts or talents of other family members and that this was our next activity.  We took turns talking about the talents and gifts that other people in our family have.  After our closing song and prayer, we each had a cookie that Mommy made.

3rd Article of Faith (review)

13 Weeks of FHE - 13 Articles of Faith

3rd Article of Faith

We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.

7-year old Mikey is spending part of the week up at Grandma’s house.  As a result, I decided not to go ahead with the 7th Article of Faith that we were scheduled to do.  It seems like the kids are having trouble with the 3rd Article of Faith, so it seemed like a good day to review.  We sang an opening song, which Hannah picked.  We practiced the 1st Article of Faith, the 2nd Article of Faith (Josh‘s favorite), the 4th Article of Faith, the 5th Article of Faith, and the 6th Article of Faith.

Next, I proceeded told them the 3rd Article of Faith.  I asked if they remembered the lesson from a few weeks ago when we first did the 3rd Article of Faith.  At first neither kid did, but as I explained it, they remember.  We practiced the 3rd Article of Faith several times.  I then had the kids come sit on my lap.  (Josh will be going into Kindergarten in a fall and just finished a 3-week summer school.  He is very interested in math right now).  I had a little white board.  I used the marker and wrote 2 + 2 = 5.    As I was writing it, I told the kids that sometimes in our life we can make mistakes.  When we do, what can we do. Josh said “repent”.  I said told him that was correct.  I asked him if 2 + 2 equals 5.  He said that is such an easy question and that 2 + 2 = 4.  I told him that just like on this white board, I can take an eraser and remove the mistake, in our life, we can remove the mistakes we make, by having faith in Christ and repenting.  And, because of the Atonement, I continued, we are able to forgiven of our sins.  We did several other math problems, then Josh took the white board and wrote a bunch of questions with the right answers.  We then sang a closing song, which Josh picked.
