10th Article of Faith

13 Weeks of FHE - 13 Articles of Faith

We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.

I had a meeting Monday night, so this week, we did Family Home Evening Sunday night.  I decided to post this Tuesday morning, however, as that has been the tradition these last 11 weeks.

We started with an opening song and opening prayer.  We then had a family council, where we discussed concerns the kids and parents had.  Next, we practiced the first 9 Articles of Faith.  I then read the long 10th Article of Faith to the family.  I discussed a few points of it and then read it again.  We next watched Zack & Zoey Explore the Articles of Faith #10

We finished with the 10th Article of Faith Poster from A Year of Family Home Evenings.  We read it a few times and then hung it up on the wall.

9th Article of Faith

13 Weeks of FHE - 13 Articles of Faith

“We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important  things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.”

After our opening song, prayer, and family council, we started Family Home Evening with a review of the first eight Articles of Faith.  Mikey has picked up on most of them pretty well, although the 4th Article of Faith is his favorite.  Josh is really good at the 1st Article of Faith, the 2nd Article of Faith (his favorite), and the 8th Article of Faith.  Hannah loves having someone help her recite any one we’ll let her. 🙂

We next practiced the 9th Article of Faith a few times.  I explained that to reveal something is the Lord telling us something.  I attempted to simplify it a bit by telling them that the 9th Article of Faith is basically telling us that we believe the things that God has told prophets in the past, we believe the things the Lord tells the prophets today, and we believe that in the future, God will tell the prophets things, and we believe those things.

Mikey loves word searches, so we did  9th Article of Faith Crossword Puzzle .  After doing that, I then led a discussion on Lorenzo Snow.  We watch a clip from the Windows of Heaven LDS video.  I paused it several times to discuss the movie and how that relates to the 9th Article of Faith.

We ended with another song and prayer.  Then we had some cookies as a treat.

My OCD Confession

I think that everyone has some OCD tendencies.  For me, I must have all the clothes hangers in my closet the same color; white.  Sometimes, there might be a hanger or two that somehow is a different color.  I tell myself its silly, but it bothers me.  But I try not to let it.  Tonight, I had to go through Amanda’s closet and take all the extra white hangers she had and put 8 or 9 hangers of various colors in hers.

What other weird OCD tendencies do people have?

Front Sight Membership Give Away

Front-Sight-Membership-Give-Away

In May, I decided to give away a Patriot Lifetime Membership to Front Sight Firearms Training Institute.  On July 2nd & 3rd, when I was at Front Sight for a 2 night defensive handgun class, I decided I wanted to do an even bigger giveaway!  Around 11:30 PM on July 3rd, all the students attending a class at Front Sight was gathered in the classroom, where an amazing gift from Dr. Ignatius Piazza, the founder of Front Sight,  was presented.  He was able to gather original signatures of all 56 patriots who signed the Declaration of Independence.  He put that, with their picture and a copy of the Declaration of Independence.  This will be proudly displayed at Front Sight.  The men who signed this document pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor in the cause of liberty and freedom.  Because of their bravery, our country was established, with its God Inspired Constitution. Part of this is the 2nd Amendment, which guarantees the right of the people to keep and bear arms.  I want to help protect this right by helping my friends and family and others gain valuable training.  The training provided here is amazing!  So, I am going to give away an amazing membership. 8th Article of Faith

We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.”

This week, after an opening song and opening prayer, we reviewed the 1st Article of Faith, the 2nd Article of Faith (Josh’s favorite), the 3rd Article of Faith, the 4th Article of Faith, the 5th Article of Faith, the 6th Article of Faith, and the 7th Article of Faith.

I the used the 8th Article of Faith Poster  from A Year of Family Home Evening.  We practiced the 8th Article of Faith.  Amanda liked this picture a lot, and had Josh hang it on the wall so the kids could practice it all week.  We then talked about the Bible and the Book of Mormon and how they were both collections of writings of prophets.  We talked about how over time during the translation of the Bible, words were changed.  Some of them were done on accident, or because the writers were trying to help people understand the message.  I also told them how Jesus appeared to the people in America after His death and resurrection.  We watched a 2 1/2 minute video clip from Living Scriptures on when He appeared to the people.

Finally, we played the telephone game.  I took Mikey to a different room and told him “The red dog jumped over the river”.  He told Josh, who told Amanda, who told Hannah, who told us “The red dot jumped over the wall.”  We discussed this, in relation to the Bible translations.  Mikey then wanted a turn.  He told Josh “I like eating popcorn at the movie theatre.”  Mikey told Josh, who told me, who told Amanda, who told Hannah, who said “Mikey likes eating popcorn at movie theatres.”  Josh admitted to changing it to Mikey so that we knew it was it was Mikey (not Josh) who liked to eat popcorn.  We also discussed this and how well meaning people tried to help improve our understanding of the Bible, but how that can cause problems if their understanding was incorrect.

After closing with another song and prayer, we had a nice treat.

The Book of Mormon on Self Defense

“And they were doing that which they felt was the duty which they owed their God; for the Lord had said unto them, and also unto their fathers, that: Inasmuch as ye are not guilty of the first offense, neither the second, ye shall not suffer yourselves to be slain by the hands of your enemies. And again, the Lord has said that: Ye shall defend your families even unto bloodshed. Therefore for this cause were the Nephites contending with the Lamanites, to defend themselves, and their families, and their lands, their country, and their rights, and their religion.”

Forest Fires & Preparedness

Over the last 12-days, the Spring Mountain ranges west of Las Vegas have been on fire (“Carpenter 1 Fire”). Nearly 28,000 acres have been burned. Hundreds of families have been displaced as their neighborhoods have been under mandatory evacuation.  My company owns and operates The Resort on Mt Charleston, which is currently closed due to the fires and evacuation orders.  I can better speak of what happened at the Resort, but I assume similar facts happened all over the mountain.  At about 10:30 PM on Friday, July 5, 2013, as guests were winding down for the night, officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the property and said the hotel needed to be evacuated due to the smoke and potential for the fire to the hotel.  Metro Police walked the hotel with hotel staff and knocked on each door, making sure that everyone left, with basically no notice.  The residents up in the area had a similar time frame.  There was some rain the last 2-days, which helped fire crews get the fire from 10% contained to 50% contained.  Without the help from the rain, crews might still have the fire at 10% containment. Obama’s Gun Violence Report

A few months ago, after the Connecticut School Shooting, President Obama issued a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence, in the hopes of “saving one child”.  As with many politicians, the President hoped to have a report coming back showing how evil guns are and that he needs to immediately disarm the law-abiding American public.

Instead, the report (available from the National Academic Press at http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=18319 (or you can download a PDF version of Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violence) painted a much different picture.

As you read it, you will plainly see why the media has been ignoring it. It doesn’t fit their template as it contains important truth such as: Continue reading

7th Article of Faith

13 Weeks of FHE - 13 Articles of Faith

“We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.”

Since all 3 kids were home last night, we were able to move forward on a new Article of Faith.  First we reviewed the 1st Article of Faith, the 2nd Article of Faith, the 3rd Article of Faith, the 4th Article of Faith, the 5th Article of Faith, and the 6th Article of Faith.  Next we read the 7th Article of Faith.  I tried to explain what each of the 6 listed gifts of the Spirit were, but was hard with the attention span of 3 little kids (and the Wife also).  Next, we moved into activities.  Mikey loves word searches, so we did a simple 7th Article of Faith Word Search.  Finally, as we moved into a second activity, I said how all of us have things we are good at, gifts or talents.  Mikey said “Yeah, like Josh is really good at running.  He is one of the fastest kids in his class, but I am one of the slowest in mine.”  I told him that I was glad he could recognize the gifts or talents of other family members and that this was our next activity.  We took turns talking about the talents and gifts that other people in our family have.  After our closing song and prayer, we each had a cookie that Mommy made.
