72-Hour Kits

In light of the earthquake that hit Northern Nevada today, I’ve decided to post today on the recommendations that FEMA has for a 72-hour kit.

As with all things preparedness, if you can’t get all of items in your 72-hour kit, gather what you can in your basic 72-hour kit. And then continue adding to it. Soon, you’ll have all gathered in so that, no matter what happens, you family can be safely gathered.

FEMA’s recommendations for a 72-Hour Kit:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert, and extra batteries for both
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First Aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask or cotton t-shirt, to help filter the air
  • Moist towelettes for sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Unique family needs, such as daily prescription medications, infant formula or diapers, and important family documents
  • Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Emergency reference material such as a first aid book or a print out of this information
  • Rain gear
  • Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils
  • Cash or traveler’s checks, change
  • Paper towels
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Tent
  • Compass
  • Matches in a waterproof container
  • Signal flare
  • Paper, pencil
  • Medicine dropper
  • Feminine supplies
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Disinfectant
  • Household chlorine bleach

I’ve included this list in my permanent Family Home Storage page.

    1. Aren’t you glad we have a huge supply of baby wipes? Think about it; we can bathe, clean, use as a tissue, burn (maybe), wipe, etc… Baby wipes are for sure going in our 72 hour kit. They are so functional in so many ways! Wish I would have invented those!
